Conventions
It was at the Square & Round Dance Canadian National Conventions that we first met Wheel Chair Modern Square Dancers.
With a little more space to dance and the Caller adjusting the timing of the moves a little bit everyone had a great time dancing. The skills of the dancers were impressive, the smiles, and laughter was infectious!
Nursing Homes
Tom enjoys calling for Wheel Chair Square Dancing at nursing homes. To complete the square of eight there are four people using their wheel chairs and four people to aid in maneuvering about the dance floor.
Arriving at the home sometimes will show evidence that not everyone is enthused, some become a little suspect of something so new!
Yet, as the music begins the tapping of toes and fingers or hands inevitably move to the music and the atmosphere lightens. All eight of the dancers begin moving through the basic calls, learning together, and the smiles all come out!
Music and movement seem to always bring about a lighter and happier feeling for everyone.
Our square dance movement works hard to support those who will benefit with a little extra help in order to learn, dance, and have fun with everyone.
It’s been fun meeting others on the dance floor whom we’ve learned are blind, or sometimes have different degrees of sight impairment.
Hands touching at all times throughout the dance keep everyone moving confidently and smoothly. Arrangements can often be made to help dancers who require aids for hearing enhancement too.
The community around this activity is truly remarkable. There is a sense of camaraderie that goes beyond age, background, and experience.
The environment of Modern Square Dancing continually encourages newcomers to step out of their comfort zones. The infectious enthusiasm for this dance is a testament to the universal appeal of dance and the connections it facilitates.
